Why this device matters

The target audience for this device comprises precision metrology laboratories, quantum optics researchers, coherent FMCW LiDAR architects, and microwave-photonics systems engineers. In long-haul optical frequency transfer networks linking optical atomic clocks across hundreds of kilometers of optical fiber, acoustic and thermal fluctuations along the fiber link corrupt phase stability. Canceling this phase noise requires establishing an active phase compensation loop using an optical frequency shifter to introduce an intentional carrier offset, which enables the system to isolate the round-trip signal from parasitic Rayleigh backscattering. In quantum systems, addressing solid-state spin centers (such as nitrogen-vacancy or silicon-vacancy centers in diamond) requires continuous-wave laser frequencies to be rapidly shifted across gigahertz ranges to overcome emitter inhomogeneous broadening. Similarly, coherent FMCW LiDAR architectures rely on frequency-shifted local oscillators to eliminate zero-frequency homodyne blind spots and unambiguously resolve target velocity from Doppler shifts.

Calculated result from assumed inputs
Calculated result from assumed inputs. Calculated from the accepted model inputs.
pockels_index: delta_n_e = -0.5 * n_e^3 * r_33 * E_z
half_wave_voltage: V_pi = lambda * G / (n_e^3 * r_33 * Gamma * L)
serrodyne_phase: phi(t) = pi * V(t) / V_pi with V_pp = 2 V_pi for a 2-pi reset
flyback_ssr_bound: SSR_dB ≈ 20 * log10(T / t_f) = -20 * log10(F)
walkoff_sinc: eta_mod(f) proportional to sinc(f * L * (n_mu – n_g) / c)

The accepted package is an analytic Thin-film lithium niobate bidirectional serrodyne optical frequency shifter model. It implements linear Pockels phase ramp from a 2-Vpi sawtooth on traveling-wave electrodes; reverse-wave velocity mismatch with assumed inputs, then reports conversion efficiency, flyback-limited spurious suppression, amplitude-error carrier leakage, half-wave voltage scaling, and reverse-wave walk-off. Literature measurements cited below are baselines, not outputs of this repository.
